Academic Development

Academic Development

At the Kindergarten and First Grade Level, academic development begins with teaching students how to apply the skills they will need for educational achievement. As a counseling department, we are committed to encouraging life-long learning. Counselors present lessons that help students learn to not only identify and follow classroom routines, but also to identify and practice the steps necessary for completing classroom assignments and activities. One important skill emphasized is the ability to employ self-management for the purpose of educational achievement. Counselors help students to identify and practice work habits that are essential for success in school.

To encourage academic development through all grade levels, counselors also help students learn to apply the skill of transitioning as they progress from one grade level to the next. The counseling department helps students identify how school expectations are different from home, day-care, or pre-school as well as how the expectations increase from grade level to grade level. As a counseling department we will also help in developing and monitoring personal educational plans. Educational planning essentially consists of helping the students to identify, develop and demonstrate the skills needed to be a successful learner.
