School Board Approves Maplecrest Elementary Gymnasium Project and Cafeteria Renovation

During a Study Session on October 30, 2019, the Lebanon R-3 Board of Education voted to approve bids for the construction of a gymnasium at Maplecrest Elementary School. The school of nearly seven hundred students does not currently have a meeting space that can hold all students at one time. The new gymnasium will be constructed as a "safe" structure that will be used for sheltering during severe weather.  The District will plan to partner with the Laclede County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to permit storm sheltering for community members when school is not in session, as is currently done at Lebanon Middle School. The project approved by the Board of Education also includes renovation and expansion of the school's cafeteria, combining the current cafeteria and multipurpose room. Lebanon R-3 Superintendent, Dr. David Schmitz stated "The Maplecrest students and staff will benefit greatly with the addition of a new gymnasium.  Not only will the entire school have a place to gather for schoolwide events, but they will also have a safe place to shelter during dangerous weather. Additionally, the expanded cafeteria will make the lunch time experience much more efficient and less crowded for students".

This project at Maplecrest Elementary is the first step in a multi-phase solution to utilize the existing structure, but provide the necessary modern-day spaces for students and educators. This addition will include a 10,000 square foot ICC-500 rated safe room that doubles as a full-court gymnasium and performance space, complete with stage, protected stage lighting and A/V, drama storage, office, and telescopic bleachers. In this first phase, the gym/safe room is joined to the existing school by a connector that will perform as a drop off entry until future phases connect back to the rest of the school. The connector serves more than circulation. It provides two additional collaboration stations in spaces that would otherwise act only as corridors. The addition of the gym will allow the existing cafeteria to take over the existing undersized multipurpose space and undergo a complete transformation into a multi-media area, continuing education space and expanded commons.

The District received five bids from general contractors on the Maplecrest project. The low bid was submitted by Bales Construction Company in the amount of $4,497,500. Bales Construction has offices in Waynesville and Springfield, serving the area for over 77 years. They have extensive experience in constructing educational facilities. A 5% contingency in the amount of $204,900 will be included for unanticipated site conditions or omissions. The contingency will only be used if necessary. Total expenses and fees on the project, including; architectural and engineering fees, civil and geo-technical fees, landscaping costs, furniture, fixtures, and equipment costs, are budgeted at $671,339. The maximum total project estimated cost is $5,373,739.

The cafeteria remodel portion of the project is scheduled to be completed by August 10, 2020 for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. The substantial completion date for the gym and connector entryway is September 11, 2020. This project will be funded through the remaining 2014 bond funds totaling $4,171,864.50. The balance will be funded by operating funds through a lease purchase agreement.
