Free Breakfast to be Offered to All LMS Students This Year

The Lebanon R-3 School District is very excited to announce that we will be offering a free breakfast for all Lebanon Middle School students. Beginning on the first day of school, August 17, there will be two dining choices for students.

The first option for students will be to visit the cafeteria, where they can enjoy a free hot breakfast there. There will be additional menu choices on the “dine in” line beyond what is shared on the weekly menu. The second option will be a take-out line in the cafeteria where students will be able to quickly pick up “grab and go” food items. These options will include hot foods, as well as breakfast bars and other snack options, as well as milk, juice and fresh fruit. Students will be able to take the take-out options to the gymnasium or to their classrooms. As the start of the school day approaches, there will also be a food cart located near the front entrance with take-out food options available until 5 minutes after the first bell rings. Students will not be able to bring food from outside sources to eat in their classrooms.

“I am thankful to the Lebanon School Board and administration for allowing us to add this great program to what we do for kids at LMS,” said Lebanon Middle School Principal Tom Merriott. “It has long been a concern of many of our teachers that students were hungry in the mornings, and many of these teachers spent their own money to provide snacks for their students. I believe this will have a positive impact on our building, and provide for a basic need that will allow us to keep kids more focused and ready to be successful each day.”

This program will provide fresh and nutritious breakfast options to all students, and will ensure that no students are forced to start their school day hungry. The District’s Breakfast in the Classroom program that started in January, at the elementary levels, has improved student concentration, meal participation numbers, and has decreased late arrivals. As with Breakfast in the Classroom, funding for free breakfasts at LMS will come from Federal Meal Program reimbursements due to high participation levels in the District.
